ABS Buys Zimmerman Bull Pilot Now Alstar at ABS
American Breeders Service purchased Zimmerman Bull Pilot, renamed Alstar, from L A and J A Zimmerman of Lehigh ton Pennsylvania. The Holstein bull leads with high U I proof for fat across 90 daughters, averaging 15 959 pounds milk and 634 pounds fat per daughter, 1140 pounds more milk than herd mates and 62 pounds more fat. The Zimmerman herd record includes 819 pounds fat on 28 cows and 20 589 pounds milk.

Merriam Leaves Extension Post for Graduate Work
Associate agricultural agent Winthrop Merriam Jr. has been granted a nine month leave of absence starting October 1 to pursue a master's degree in extension education at Penn State University. The announcement was made at a Lancaster County Extension Association dinner meeting at Meadow Hills Dining Room in Lancaster RG. Merriam, a University of Connecticut alumnus and livestock judging team member, joined the local extension staff in 1958 as an assistant county agricultural agent.

Top Hog States Cut Cholera But Not Gain
USDA reports the top five hog producing states Illinois Indiana Iowa Minnesota Missouri cut confirmed hog cholera outbreaks by half to 295 for year ending June 30 while 14 states had no outbreaks.
