New Farm Legislation Proposes Broad Policy Change
Congress moves to overhaul farm policy with the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1969. The plan, led by Sen. Everett Dirksen and Sen. Charles Mathias, would retire at least 10 million acres yearly from 1971 to 1975, phase out controls and payments, cut support, and set price supports at no more than 85 percent of a three year average. A retraining grant program would aid needy farm families seeking nonfarm employment.
