The Lancaster County 4-H Potato Grading and Identification Team finished third at the Farm Show contest. Jeff Risser and Judy Risser of Leola RD1 and Michael Peifer of Manheim RD1 represented the county, with Risser tying for high individual score at 441 alongside a Somerset County youth as 13 teams competed.
The 1971 Sweepstakes 4H Beef Show at the Farm Show saw Lancaster County contestants place second and third in team showmanship. Marvin Nissiey and Ray Brubaker won second and third in individual breed showman ship, while no firsts were recorded in those events.
Lancaster County agricultural agent Max Smith notes Farm Show items exhibitible this year. Nissley won Angus last year and Brubaker Herefords, as area winners are announced across beef, poultry, corn, potato, tobacco, and sheep categories with 4H participants highlighted.
Lancaster County 4H members shone at the Farm Show with a Reserve Grand Champion pen of three and two Reserve Grand Champion individuals. Kenneth Brubaker, son of Clyde and (name) Brubaker, showed the top Hampshire pen and the Reserve Grand Champion Hampshire lamb. The Herrs earned the Reserve Champion market Dorset. Elizabeth Brubaker captured the champion Cheviot, while Carol Bushong and Linda Ober claimed top Shropshire honors with first-place pens and individuals.
Michael Peifer 15 of Manheim RD1 won first prize in live and dressed birds in the 4 H capon class at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. He is a Lititz Manheim 4 H Community Club member who also held last year’s live bird title and earlier county capon honors in 1969 1967 and reserve champion in 1968.
Lancaster County Pomona Grange dinner at Rhoads Spanish Restaurant Quarryville Saturday January 16. FFA and Young Farmers meetings follow through Monday to Thursday including Ephrata Garden Spot and Manheim events with topics on taxes and record filing. Dairy Day noted for January 21 at Holiday Inn with extension sessions.
Wiley P Gehman of Macungie Lehigh County won shelled grain harvested with 211 bushels per acre. Co-champions in ear corn harvested are George B Wingert Chambersburg and Clyde K Eshelman and Sons Washington Boro. The 1970 contest saw 256 entrants up 15 from last year as Dr Joseph McGahen notes. Gehman set a population of 24 060 per acre.
