Farm & Home Campaign Builds Steam As Launch Nears

The Farm and Home Foundation Campaign moves quickly toward a $375,000 goal with a Center plan to aid farmers. Noah W. Kreider chairs the Campaign Steering Committee in Manheim R2 as volunteers grow countywide. Campaign leaders Brubaker and Skromme report widespread organization with most districts active. Two kickoff lifts are planned for January with volunteer canvassers in Lititz and the northern county. Continued on Page 11.

Farm Calendar highlights Pennsylvania events

January activities include the Pennsylvania Farm Show from January 11 to 15 with evening meetings at Fulton Grange No. 66 and a Hybrid Seed Corn Banquet in Harrisburg. Farm groups meet at Penn Manor, Education Building in Harrisburg, and Eph rata High School with various banquets and conventions in early to mid January.

Penn State Holds Four Weekly Dairy Clinics in Chester County

Penn State University sponsors a series of dairy feeding clinics in Chester County at Honey Brook Fire Hall and Russellville Grange Hall. The meetings aim to provide detailed instruction and recent research data with practical farm applications.

Stockholders to Vote on Lancaster Farm Bureau Merger

On January 22 about 4300 common stockholders of the Lancaster County Farm Bureau Cooperative Association will vote on merging the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau with Agway. The special meeting was announced at the annual meeting held at the Manheim Township High School. Directors Graybill Gibble Samuel B Heisey Paul Herr and Melvin Stoltzfus were reappointed to three year terms. Dr Milford Heddleson of Pennsylvania State University Extension Service spoke on land use planning.

Improve Tobacco Returns Through Better Handling

The Penn State station researchers say new varieties Pennbel-69 and Pennleaf-1 boost yields 100-200 pounds per acre and resist tobacco mosaic and wildfire. Proper topping, sizing, and leaf removal by size can raise quality, but buyers differ on grading. A market shift toward standards and price supports may affect farmer attitudes. Continued on Page 4.

Trimble Repeats as Lancaster 4-H Corn Champion

Paul D. Trimble of Quarryville Ri wins his tenth county grand championship in Lancaster County 4 H corn roundup using Pioneer 3131 yielding 149 bushels per acre. A Solanco High School graduate, Trimble sits in state competition at Farm Show with six previous southeastern district honors. Reserve champion is Kenneth Hess of Strasburg R1, 17.

Five Day Weather Outlook With Mild To Cool Swings

The forecast covers Saturday through Wednesday with above normal temperatures. Highs near 39 and lows around 24 set the normal benchmark. Expect mild Saturday, cooler Sunday and Monday, mild Tuesday, then cooler Wednesday. Precipitation around a quarter inch, showers on Saturday and again Tuesday or Wednesday.
