Dick Warner surveys farmer and agribusiness outlook for 1975 noting high costs in 1974 and cautious expectations for 1975. Experts foresee tough year but potential profits with sharp management, possible easing in feed costs, and no major negative trends on the horizon.
Four H youths in Lancaster County prepare for the Pennsylvania State Farm Show 4 H Baby Beef Show and Sale. About 36 participants spend holidays on farm tasks washing brushing clipping and exercising their steers before the state competition.
Judges L C Whitemore and Maurice Hostetter praised the Lancaster County tobacco harvest as the best in years. Roy M Rohrer won three classes including champion wrapper in a 114-entry contest with winners Eugene Rohrer Michael Rohrer and Timothy Hostetter taking top filler binder and long wrapper respectively.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show introduces a new $1 parking fee for visitors while maintaining free admissions. Farm Show director Wellington Smith cites inflation and a stretched appropriation as reasons and says the charge will help count attendance rather than deter visitors. Smith, who since 1972 has led cost cutting praised by the agriculture secretary, notes continued budget tightening.
Outstanding FFA members statewide receive Keystone Farmer Degrees during the Pennsylvania FFA convention in Harrisburg. About 95 members from Lancaster, Berks, Chester, Lebanon and York Counties are slated for the honor this year, with biographies beginning on page 42.
