Lancaster County corn acreage for 1955 is reduced 13 percent, down 13 605 acres to a total of 80 189. Allotments use 73 percent of the farm average, down from 86 percent last year. Notices go to farmers Feb 28 with a 15 day appeal window. Only 17 farmers have loan applications so far, due by May 31.
Three Lancaster County farms faced grass fires this week. At George Ludwig Farm New Holland the blaze threatened structures but was put out by Liberty Fire Co. Mrs Lillie Caldwell farm near Intercourse was saved by Intercourse Fire Co after high winds hampered firefighters. Quarryville firefighters contained a glass fire at James Poole’s farm near Little Britain with no damage.
Three positive trichinosis cases in Lebanon County prompt warnings to cook pork thoroughly. At Good Samaritan Hospital Lebanon three people were hospitalized including Mrs Esther Sheetz Myerstown and Russell Strickler Newmann town while Gerald Walters Lebanon showed inconclusive tests. Fresh pork sausage blamed. All pork should be cooked thoroughly.
David Groff of Oxford elected president of the Chester County 4 H Tractor Maintenance Club. Edwin Hoover of Parkesburg named vice president, Owen Groff Jr of Oxford secretary, and Charles Griest of Coatesville named news reporter.
On the Harry Griffith Farm near Quarryville, a 78 by 8 foot trench silo was built as part of Lancaster County Trench Silo tour stops. County Agent Max Smith and Penn State Extension Agricultural Engineer discussed cost, construction, capacity, and use to about 40 attendees.
Prices ran surprisingly well for the 157th Garden Spot Holstein sale held Thursday. Average $293 on 90 lots totaling $26,374. top cow brought $535 paid by A. G. Herman of Waynesfield for an animal consigned by James Corrigan of Staten Island. Bulls topped at $335 from Piney Hill Farms and Joseph Schott. Multiple cows sold above $400 with four at $500 or more. Local buyers included D L Lauder, J Eby Hershey, W Emanuel Hoover, J Witmer, and many from Mount Joy Lancaster and other nearby towns.
Rabies suspected after two cattle on Clayton G Rohrer’s Quarryville area farm died with definite brain signs. Heads sent to Boston Center for lab confirmation as Penn State unit analyzes Negri bodies. Farm quarantined 100 days. no other local cases reported, though wild animals have tested positive nearby.
