Lancaster County soil and water district approves a one year sabbatical for secretary Garland E. Gingerich of Millersville Al a Penn Manor High School vocational agriculture instructor. The leave was approved at a directors meeting held at the county courthouse.
Penn State agronomist Dr. John Baylor told Lancaster County dairy farmers that corn silage yields total energy per acre and alfalfa leads in protein. He noted four factors for crop choice: yield and profit, soil limits, machinery and storage, and each farmer’s livestock program. He cited state farm data showing corn silage and alfalfa as the two most profitable forages and urged programs built around them.

The weatherman says cold weather continues for five days with temperatures averaging below 43 to 24 degrees. No major daily changes are expected and light precipitation may occur as melt first, then snow or rain early next week.
Lancaster County agricultural agent M M Smith announced a series of three estate planning clinics to be held at the John Neff School in Neffsville. All sessions start at 7 30 p m and are open to any interested person. Dates and topics were listed for page 8.
Howett Seiverling, junior at Warwick High School, plans to study two years of agriculture at Penn State University then decide between further education or entering agribusiness. Aimed at production agriculture, he owns dairy and poultry ventures on a 73 acre Lititz area farm, with tobacco and crops on rented land. He earned an Ayrshire calf award and will show her at the district FFA show in Hershey.
A Lancaster County Poultry Association meeting at the Lititz Community Center drew over 100 poultrymen as egg marketing experts urged broader producer processor coordination and new poultry housing to stay competitive in eastern markets. Raymond W Sauder outlined farm level egg handling steps to improve quality and meet consumer demand.
