Best Forage Program For Dairymen Emphasizes Corn Silage Alfalfa

Penn State agronomist Dr. John Baylor told Lancaster County dairy farmers that corn silage yields total energy per acre and alfalfa leads in protein. He noted four factors for crop choice: yield and profit, soil limits, machinery and storage, and each farmer’s livestock program. He cited state farm data showing corn silage and alfalfa as the two most profitable forages and urged programs built around them.

County FFA Pres Sees Future In Agribusiness

Howett Seiverling, junior at Warwick High School, plans to study two years of agriculture at Penn State University then decide between further education or entering agribusiness. Aimed at production agriculture, he owns dairy and poultry ventures on a 73 acre Lititz area farm, with tobacco and crops on rented land. He earned an Ayrshire calf award and will show her at the district FFA show in Hershey.
