Poultrymen Plan Education Meetings This Winter

The Lancaster County Poultry Association announces three educational meetings in January and February. January focuses on business and management with Herb Jordan and Homer Bixler at Lititz Recreation Center. February topics cover marketing strategy with Kermit Birth and Larry Yeager, and trends with Sam Berenson and Richard Ammon at Lititz Recreation Center and Farm and Home Center. All begin at 7 45 p m with refreshments and possible invites to Berks Lebanon and York Counties.

Persuading People To Accept New Farming Methods

Agricultural economist Dr. John Sjo of Kansas State University urged expanded Social Science emphasis in college agriculture. He called social, economic, cultural, and political behavior central to modern farming challenges highlighted at a Conference on Undergraduate Teaching in Agronomy with AS A, CSSA, and SSSA meetings.

Local Hogmen To Start Self-Help Program

A voluntary self-help program to raise hog profits begins January 1, 1968. The Nickels For Profit plan, backed by the Lancaster County Swine Producers Association, unites hog farmers for quality improvement and product promotion with a contribution of five cents per market hog or two cents per head.

Soil and water plan gains urban rural joint role

Pennsylvania adopts House Bill 1511, making urban representation mandatory in soil and water conservation at local and state levels. The program is producer financed with proceeds from hog sales funding state and county efforts, and only hog producers may serve on boards. Local hog groups and dealers coordinate nickel collection with 1 cent to National Livestock and Meat Board, 0.36 to Pennsylvania programs, 0.04 to National Pork Producers.

Cool-Headed Cows Give More Milk, Study Shows

A USDA ARS study with the University of Missouri found cows produced 15 to 20 percent more milk when their heads and necks were cooled to 60 degrees Fahrenheit than in an 85 degree barn. Lead researcher G LeRoy Hahn showed zone cooling boosts production without full barn air conditioning.
