U S Secretary of Agriculture urged action as a new foreign Newcastle disease threatens U S poultry flocks with high mortality, outbreaks in New York Florida Texas and New Mexico causing substantial losses. Officials advise rapid testing at State Diagnostic Laboratories and reporting to aid containment.
The USDA recommends amending the Middle Atlantic Federal milk order to create an advertising and promotion program funded by a 5 cent per hundredweight assessment on producers. The plan follows a September Baltimore hearing by dairy cooperatives and is authorized by the 1971 Agricultural Marketing Agreement Act. Quarterly refunds would be issued from the marketwide pool.
Farm activities include Deer Season on December 13 14. Garden Spot and Ephrata Young Farmer meetings December 14. National Farmers Convention in Kansas City December 15-17. Also guidance on program participation and filing comments with the U.S. Department of Agriculture through December 21.
