Prices received by Pennsylvania farmers in mid November trended down from October, lagging the national drop. Milk prices remained firm, livestock prices fell with hogs and calves leading declines, while wholesale milk and milk cows held steadier. The USDA reports the index of prices for farm products fell about one per cent in the month ending November 15 due to lower meat animals citrus fruit corn cotton and eggs. Prices for some vegetables poultry soybeans and milk rose, while prices farmers pay stayed the same. The parity ratio slipped to 79 from October 15.
Homer K. Luttringer, assistant advertising and public relations director for the New Holland Machine Co., was reelected secretary treasurer of the Agricultural Relations Council. The 123 member national council, meeting in Chicago, elected Lyle Liggett as president and Merle J. Thomas as vice president, both from leading industry groups.
Peterborough New Hampshire reports Harry Robert Mumma a Penn State sophomore named one of three national winners in the 1961 Guernsey Scholarship Training Program. He worked at Liseter Farm Newton Square under Winslow Towle and will receive a $300 scholarship toward 1961 62 college expenses. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Harry Mumma Manheim R1 and was active in county Guernsey 4 H club in high school.
Henry E. Givler, vocational agriculture teacher at Pequea Valley high school, was elected president of the Lancaster County Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. He succeeds Herbert Heberlein at Solanco. Garland Gingerich of Penn Manor was named vice president and a three year board term on the county Future Farmers of America chapter. The board also includes Robert Henney of Warwick and Givler. Henney finishes his term, Givler has two years left. Louis Ayers of Ephratia high school was named secretary. Howard Siglin, teacher
Alfred M Overly of Quarryville R2 received the Regional Outstanding Young Farmer honor at the Pennsylvania Young Farmers Association meeting. A former USAF member, he began farming five years ago after partnering with his father on a 140 acre East Earl County farm and turned a net worth from about 4000 to over 39000 in that period.
Lancaster County corn producers faced heavy snow damage last winter and saw a sharp rise in European Corn Borer infestation. Bureau of Plant Industry surveys show 63 of 100 stalks infested in the current crop versus 34 in 1960 and 25 in 1959, with worms per infested stalk increasing from 2.16 to 3.44.
The Lancaster County Guernsey Breeders Association reorganized Wednesday night at Harold Herr’s home in Kirkwood electing Harry Mumma as president succeeding Paul Ankrum. Ellis Denlinger became vice president and James Lefever secretary treasurer with John Landis named publicity director. K Deiter Linde heads the Spring Tour Committee with Raymond Witmer and Richard Maule as members. Denlinger will chair the Field Day Committee with Jesse Balmer and Herbert Myer also on the panel.
Thirty nine Future Farmers were chosen this week to receive the Red Rose Farmer degree in the second year the award has been made. Recipients are limited to 15 percent of county FFA membership and are based on class work in vocational agriculture supervised farming program and leadership ability. They will be honored at a county FFA meeting January 29 at the New Holland high school.
