Frey Family Dominates Garden Spot Baby Beef Show
Eleven year old William Frey won grand champion with a 995 pound angus while John Frey aged thirteen claimed reserve with an 842 pound steer. Maria Frey placed eleventh and Magda Frey showed 841 pounds. Grand champion bred by Old Home Manor Farm Homer City and linked to Maria Frey’s 1961 state show win. The Frey cattle were fed a corn oats barley ration with a 32 percent supplement and adjusted as they neared show time.

4-H Teams Score Statewide Wins in Judging Contests
About 800 boys participated in Pennsylvania State University judging demonstrations. York County and Lancaster County 4-H clubs earned blue ribbons in foods and nutrition, clothing and dairy judging while Swine and Vegetable teams placed highly. Standout individuals include Belinda Kay and Marcelle White from Manheim and George Overgaard scoring 21140 in the exhibition at Landisville.

Weaver Wins Grand Champion at State Landrace Show
Raymond H. Weaver of New Holland Rhode Island showed the grand champion gilt at the Pennsylvania Landrace swine show and sale in Blue Ball last Saturday. Top sale pig was Martin Gilt Conestoga Lot Knicky at 12500 from Harry Prock. Runner up gilt was Walnut Lawn Bell bred and shown by Harry C Tripp, bringing 8250 from Ronald Ewing. Boar top price 10500 bought by Elam M. Reiff. second boar 95 went to North Carolina State College for crossbreeding. Judges praised improving quality of Landrace stock. page 13.

PFA Women Hold Tea at Lancaster County Meeting
The Penna Farmers Association Women held their annual Lancaster County Tea at the Farm Bureau Building in Lancaster on August 10. Mrs Lewis Bixner of Marietta chaired the gathering with devotions by Mrs Raymond Stoner and remarks by Darwin Boyd of Ephrata about the 1961 National Youth Congress. A skit titled A Dream was performed by Mrs Martin Greenleaf of Oxford RD.

Lancaster County Tobacco Crop Seen Rising Over Last Year
The Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service says Lancaster County tobacco is set to yield better than last year’s record crop and about 12 percent above the state average. The upward revision comes from nearly perfect late July weather, lifting total county estimates to about 535 million pounds from 527 million reported a month earlier as farmers finished late field work in mid July.

SCD Approves Eight Plans for Soil Conservation
Lancaster County Soil Conservation District tentatively approved eight free soil conservation plans covering 721 acres. Formal approval awaits a quorum at the next meeting.
