Rapid Growth and Early Calving Improve Dairy Heifer Output
A long range Penn State study of 2 365 Holstein cows shows first calving at 24 months with a body weight around 1 100 pounds yields the highest lifetime production. Heifers calving at 25–26 months and 1 200 pounds also perform well, while older ages reduce daily production. Early calving increases life-time profit, valued at about 283 dollars per cow compared with later calving. The research underscores the importance of a good calf and heifer-raising program.
