Terri Ann Shank to Represent Poultrymen at Hershey Queen Contest

Terri Ann Shank, 17, of Lancaster County is chosen to represent local poultry farmers at the Hershey State Queen Contest during Pennsylvania Dutch Days. A Elizabethtown High School graduate, she plans Messiah College study in Home Economics and has won two scholarships totaling 500 dollars.

Guernsey Field Day Set For Tuesday August 19

The Lancaster County Guernsey Field Day is planned for Tuesday August 19 at the home of Mr and Mrs Clarence Harnish 2105 Pequea Lane. Morning judging of three Guernsey classes begins at 10 am with Willard Lashbrook as judge and afternoon speaker. Lunch will be available and the public is invited to visit the creekside farm.

Sloping Wire Floors Equal in Egg Production for Hens

At the 58th Poultry Sciences Association meeting in Fort Collins Colorado Dr Gienn O Bressler of Penn State reported White Leghorn breeding flocks on sloping wire floors with 34 sq ft per hen matched conventional litter floors on 2% sq ft per hen for egg production and fertility. Hatchability rose 3 percent on the wire system and Penn State now recommends six tenths of a square foot per bird for breeding flocks.

Local Farm Trophy Winners Earn Contour and Level Honors

Zimmerman of East Earl receives the Contour Land award and Richard Groff of Lititz R3 the Level Land trophy at the annual event. Both men had won two previous trophies in prior years. This caption notes their repeated success at the local gathering.
