Leaf Hoppers In Alfalfa Rise In Warm Weather
Local extension agent Harry S. Sloat reports a rise in leaf hoppers in alfalfa during hot, dry conditions while alfalfa weevils hibernate and aphids appear in some areas. Recommendations include treating after second cutting with 1.5 quarts of 25 percent Methoxychlor per acre and 40 to 100 gallons water, and using 1.5 pints of 56 percent Marathon per acre for heavy aphid populations. If grasshoppers threaten adjacent grain fields, spray a 20 to 30 foot strip where grain was harvested and the adjacent alfalfa with 1 quart 25 percent Hepthlor per acre in 25 to 100 gallons water or 1 quart Toxephene.
