Beef Bulls Should Not Be C flagged for One Semen Test
ARS researchers report semen tests predict group fertility but not individual bull fertility. In a study at Fort Crawford Nebraska 32 Hereford Angus and Shorthorn bulls showed good and poor groups with 67 percent and 45 percent mating success but individual outcomes varied. Some poor bulls bred well and some good bulls produced low conception rates. Semen quality varied weekly and many bulls showed multiple abnormalities.
