Lancaster County grain centers show peak truck receipts while quality declines. Cargill at Marietta reports 56 to 57 lb wheat with many 55 to 59 lb lots. Quarryville notes 53 to 61 lb weights. Mills store most grain, with little loan activity and high throughput at Cargill.
Near Pequea in Lancaster County a tobacco harvest this week topped previous July records. Marty Eschbach of Pequea Valley Farm said it is the earliest harvest he has seen in over 50 years. Planting began April 16 and transplanting to the 54 acre plot occurred June 6. Weather has improved and dry spells allow combines to operate. hay second cutting and sprayers are active.
Several hundred dairymen and families will attend the Lancaster County Holstein Breeders Association field day on August 7 at the Frey Farm five miles south of Lancaster on Route 222. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Frey herd inspection and judging contests.
Lancaster County youth captured judging prizes at the Brandywine Angus Breeders Field Day on Ivy Farms Malvern Pa Wilbur Hassler 14 Manheim won top youth awards in three Angus categories Darwin Boyd Ephrata and Willam McDonald Millersville led further wins in heifer judging Adult prize went to Art Neuen schwander Millard Farms Annville with second to Bud Jenks Bou dimot Farms Chester Springs A drawing awarded a donated Angus heifer to Edward Radomski Belfrey Farm Norristown.
Prices for green pack tomatoes in Lancaster County show a 75 percent rise from a year ago with $1.75 per five-eighths at Parke Eshleman Holtwood receiving station. Warfel & Sons Ben Warfel station reports first ripe tomatoes from Washington Boro area with about 400 baskets. Rainy foliage may slow ripening, but good growing weather is noted and a five week season is anticipated.
Lancaster County records show July average around 71.5 degrees, two and a half degrees below normal, marking it the second coolest July since 1912. Precipitation reached 5.6 inches, about 1.3 inches above normal, with limited 90-degree days and scattered rainfall amid delayed farming and harvests. Weather outlook calls for about two degrees below normal through Monday, then warmer by Saturday and cooler by Monday.
Lan caster Poultry Exchange receipts soar to new weekly record as prices stay well below mid July 1955. As of July 15 1956 chickens rose 1.2 cents from June but averaged 4.7 cents lower than last year. Broilers this week sold 21 to 22 percent, averaging 21.21, versus 28.5 cents a year ago. July totals show 266 575 more sold than July 1955.
