Shining Moldboards and Wet Fields on May Eve

Lancaster Farming reports new tractor work on Robert Harnish’s Manheim R2 farm as wet soils and a stiff south wind limit field work. Harnish, recently married, farms 70 Holstein cattle on 7% acres with his father Jacob nearby. The Delaware Valley climate shows frequent showers with oats seeding slowed, fruit trees blooming, and no frost damage to cherries peaches or apples.

Dutch Meal Served Rhode Island Guests at Garden Spot

About 50 Rhode Island FFA youths, plus a few girls, arrived late by bus at Garden Spot High School and were welcomed with a hearty home style supper prepared by East Earl Bartram Leaman and Garden Spot students. The spread included bread and butter, ham loaf, mashed potatoes, baked beans, beets, chow chow, eggs, apple sauce, and desserts like graham cracker banana pudding and cake. The guests appeared well behaved and courteous as they settled in for the meal and local hospitality.

Quality Statements Made At Marketing Council Meeting

Statements at the All Council Conference in Hershey stressed that quality outlasts price and shapes consumer demand. Nine state marketing advisory councils, plus sponsors like the Department of Agriculture Agway and the Pennsylvania Poultry Federation, discussed how quality evolves with tastes across apples eggs grapes mushrooms potatoes poultry vegetables nursery products and farm markets.

Cereal Leaf Beetle Survey Planned Across 25 Counties

The State Agriculture Department announced a cereal leaf beetle survey set to begin May 1 in 25 counties. The beetle, a relatively new plant pest, threatens oats wheat and barley and has spread eastward since its Michigan 1962 discovery, appearing in Pennsylvania in 1967. The survey will be a cooperative effort by the departments involved.

Jay Irwin of the county agent staff says informing youths about agriculture issues helps them advocate with facts. More than 100 youths teachers and co op leaders attended at the Farm and Home Center where Half Dean of Penn State urged focus on quality over quantity in cooperative education.

The Lancaster County Farm and Home Foundation announces eight 1969 scholarships up to 400 dollars for Agriculture and Home Economics. Funded by the Elmer L.
