Hay Drying Not For Everyone Expert Says
Penn State extension engineer Joseph VicCardy told farmers at a local meeting that heat drying hay is costly and viable only for farms with more than 200 tons to process. He cited fuel and electricity costs around 300 per ton, up to 600 per ton with equipment. Natural air drying could lower costs to about 100 per ton. Cube bales offer advantages, and PSU tests showed one ton could be baled and loaded in about 9 1/2 minutes with multiple helpers.

Apple Hearing Date Postponed in Harrisburg
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture postponed the apple marketing order hearing from May 9 and 10 to May 24 and 25. Sessions start at 10 am daily in Room 324 Main Capitol Building Harrisburg. The change was due to an error by the newspaper in publishing the notice.

DHIA Tester Wins Honor in Pennsylvania
Wilbur Houser of Lampeter was named Pennsylvania's outstanding DHIA supervisor at the annual Pennsylvan ia DHIA meeting in Macungie. Eleven testers were honored by the Pennsylvania Artificial Breeding Cooperative Association. Crmder of Manheim was elected secretary treasurer of the supervisors group. Fifteen of Lancaster County's sixteen testers attended the all day meeting near Allentown. It was the first time a Lancaster County tester won the award.
