36th National 4-H Conference Set Apr 17 22
About 250 young men and women will gather in Washington from the 50 states and Puerto Rico for the 36th National 4 H Club Conference. The event runs April 17 to 22 with aims to discuss national issues and strengthen democratic values and citizenship responsibilities through speakers and activities. Lancaster County has no representative this year.

Flowers For The Living Becomes Big Business For Girvin
Althorzh funerals once dominated Girvin Flowers of Leola but now most orders are for joyful or casual occasions. Mrs John Girvin notes people buy flowers year round for home beauty. Easter and Mother's Day bring a strong rush, with the firm running long hours and shifting 23 employees as needed. The business started in 1898, now operates two Lancaster outlets and one Leola shop, with a 110000 square foot greenhouse complex. About half of sales are wholesale to balance the seasonal workload. Holstein Tour Planned by Lancaster Association for Apr 21
The Lancaster County Holstein Association announced a tour on April 21 in the Lebanon County area. Notable stops include Harvey Bom gardener's operation with loose housing and free stalls and a 62 cow herd yielding 15 621 pounds of milk and 606 pounds of fat. The Ferndale Farm of Frank Reist will also be on the schedule, an old time herd established in earlier years.
