The shot was taken through a porthole on the British steamer Theodore which departed Norfolk Virginia for Italy with coal. Photographer Guy B. Van Dorn of Columbus Ohio sailed on the St Theodore. The ship was held December 12 and later Van Dorn was taken aboard the raider and landed at Pernambuco. It is uncertain if the raider escaped. Reports of vessel sinking by British warships remain unverified.
