Hochul apologizes for New York actions at Thomas Indian School
Governor Kathy Hochul formally apologized to the Seneca Nation for the states role operating the former Thomas Indian School in Cattaraugus Territory Charlotte New York. She met with President Seneca and survivors on the site of the Seneca Nation Administration Campus marking the first visit by a sitting New York governor to Native territory. The school operated from 1875 to 1957 and housed Indigenous youths from Seneca Cayuga Tuscarora Oneida and other nations. Officials say hundreds or thousands of children died or suffered abuse during forced assimilation. The event fulfilled a pledge made during a prior Seneca Nation visit to Albany.
