WNY Superheroes and Cosplayers Bring Hope to Children
West Seneca native Mark Mendola founded WNY Superheroes and Cosplayers in 2017, a nonprofit with 35 volunteers who dress as heroes and villains to visit sick children, support fundraisers, and attend parades for free. Dawn Mendola, sister of the founder, died of cancer in 1983.

Buffalo cosplayers visit sick children spreading smiles and charity
Mendola recalls visits by Buffalo Sabres captain Gilbert Perreault to a Roswell Park patient, a child who hugged a Shadow performer, and the broader WNY Superheroes and Cosplayers group. The volunteers, including Tony Provolone and Candace Hatfield, travel across New York and Pennsylvania, dressing as Mario, Batman, Penguin, and other characters to lift spirits through personal interactions and collectible trading cards.
