The 2023 WNY Healthcare Hero Awards invites online nominations through Sept. 13 for a Oct. 11 awards ceremony at the M Hotel Ballroom. Cash prizes go to first, second and third place. Eligible entrants are Western New York healthcare workers 21 or older employed at hospitals, clinics, doctor offices or related facilities.
Williamsville trustee Eileen Torre raised a local concern at a June work session about the invasive tree of heaven Ailanthus altissima and the spotted lanternfly. She urged residents to uproot the tree to curb the pest. The lanternfly, first spotted in Buffalo in 2022, feeds on trees and produce, spreading mold via honeydew. Experts urge checking belongings after travel and destroying egg masses. The NYS DEC provides disposal and reporting guidance and recommends pulling entire trees or treating stumps with herbicide.
