County approves revenue sharing and bids for new patrol vehicles

Dawson County commissioners approved a revenue sharing budget of 115 433 with major allocations to public safety and general government funds about 48 000 each. An additional 19 419 84 funds go to the South Plains Health Unit. Bids will be opened Oct 12 for two patrol vehicles for Sheriff Horton and one pickup for Precincts 1 and 4. Life insurance was discussed with no action.

Weather and crop losses loom after September hail in West Texas

The region faced heavy September weather with hail damaging crops across Martin and Dawson counties. A farmer near Patricia lost most of 708 acres to 4:30 p.m. Friday, leaving 40 acres of cotton. About 3,800 to 4,000 acres were affected. some insured, others not. Bob Craig of Hamlin, a longtime editor and West Texas Press Association secretary treasurer, died at 50 after a heart attack.

1981 Dawson County Fair Opens With Week of Activities

Farmers and townspeople gathered as the Dawson County Fair began its 1981 run on Tuesday with livestock displays, arts entries, a carnival, and judging set for Wednesday. The women's division opened late. events include pet show, slipper kicking, swine judging, and Thursday features seniors, poultry, rabbits, pigeons, a turtle race, frog jumping, and country music. Friday brings the baby contest and more fair activities.

Hailstorm Destroys About Four Thousand Acres of Cotton

About 4000 acres of cotton in Dawson and northern Martin counties were wrecked by a Friday hailstorm. Farmers Jesse Stephens and Walter Wade reported large total losses with Wade insured. Other affected properties include Irvin Boff Ronnie Cornett Charlie Hightower Donnell Echols and Robert Dennis farms. A second storm Sunday night caused minor hail damage in Welch and western Dawson County areas.

Ladies top pigskin pickers edge peers in weekly football contest

Diane Griffith led entrants with a 17 3 record and 45 tie-break points to win first place. Vicky Alonzo took third with 16 4 and 45 tie-break points while Mark Coffey posted 16 4 and 48 tie-break points for second. Prizes award 15 10 5 dollars. fourteen others posted 16 wins. After two weeks David Quisenberry leads with 31 9, ahead of a pack on 30 wins.

Budget Adopted for Dawson County Appraisal District

The Dawson County Tax Appraisal District approved an operating budget of 282,134 for 1982. It allocates 115,600 for salaries, 56,840 for mineral appraisal by Pritchard and Abbott, 13,850 for outside appraisal, and 20,000 for a mapping program. Only 266,839 is to be collected from five taxing groups. the rest comes from projected year-end excess funds.

United Way campaign kicks off in Dawson County

A Dawson County United Way ceremony at the Texas Electric Reddy Room launches the advance division as it aims to raise 29100 of the 48500 total. Tommy Thompson chairs the effort with captains John Hegi Ray Renner Wendell Strahan and Curtis leading teams.
