First Cotton Bale Signals Harvest at Union Farm

In Dawson County Earl Hatchett harvested the year's first bale at 4 15 pm Monday weighing 470 pounds after hand picking a ten acre dryland patch. The bale came from Stripper 33 cotton planted May 8 on the Hatchett farm near Union.

Fourth Paper Drive Slated by County 4-H Clubs

The Welch 4-H Club will run the fourth annual paper drive this Saturday starting at 8 am. Call the County Extension Office at 872-3444 to arrange pickup of old magazines newspapers or cardboard. Dawson County 4-H Clubs have already collected a near semi trailer load, earning $10.50 per ton for the State 4-H Youth Center in Brownwood.

Tractor Pull Set Saturday At Lamesa Rodeo Grounds

The first Dawson County tractor pulling contest is planned for Saturday at the Lamesa Rodeo Grounds. Events are in three weight classes with $100 first prizes, $75 for second, and $50 for third. Entry fee is $25 per class and admission is $2 for adults, $1 for children. Contact Jerry Bell at 812 2144 for details.

Blue Law Enforcement Sought Here in Lamesa

Sam Kirkland manager of Perry's Store filed a complaint in Justice of the Peace Court against Gibson's owner Ron Scott alleging violation of the Sunday Closing Law. Scott pleaded not guilty with Willis Gresham as attorney and a $6900 bond posted awaiting trial. The case proceeded after a motion to dismiss over warrant and complaint mismatch.

Dawson County Fair Opens With Wide Range of Exhibits

Planning for the 1973 Dawson County Fair runs September 12 to 16 with livestock shows in cattle swine sheep rabbits pigeons bantams and poultry. The event honors Andrew Essary long-time vocational agriculture teacher. The fair features women’s division crafts hobbies and exhibits plus a community carnival alongside livestock competition.
