A Dawson County check showed the base count rising past 88 000 by mid afternoon Friday as farmers worked through clear skies and resumed full field activity on Thursday and Friday despite the missing killing frost.
Several gins reported labor problems caused by a lack of workers. One ginner cited a check with the Lamesa Cotton Classing Office showing about 75,841 samples in question. See Cotton Page 2.
The Texas Electric Service Company signs a 154000 building contract in Lamesa with Snody Construction and Crawley family, to begin in one week. The 2430 square foot facility will include a drive up window, off street parking, ready room and offices with completion set at 240 calendar days.
The city terminates its pound service and contracts with the SPCA to handle all impounded animals. Dr. David Smith had cared for dogs previously, citing staffing and workload issues. City officials thank him as SPCA pens near the Snyder Big Spring overpass become the new impoundment site.
Howard County Junior College surveys Lamesa and Dawson County residents on desired spring courses. A copy appears on page 4. return surveys to the Lamesa Chamber of Commerce office assisting the effort.
Lamesa High School’s Super Tors remained unbeaten at 10-0 with a 33-2 victory over Sweetwater, led by Kent McCurley and Melvin Robinson. Jerry Calhoun added two rushing TDs and 77 yards, while Calhoun and MecCurley sparked the offense as Lamesa locked up the district 4AAA title and prepared for bi district playoff against Wichita Falls Hirshi.
Judge George Hansard's 106th District Courtroom heard guilty pleas from Carmen Moreno 25 for murder with malice in the shooting death of Billy Hardaway Sr 46. Moreno received five years in the penitentiary. Derotello Flores pled guilty to heroin possession and received a ten year maximum probated sentence with $50 costs. Enrique Gusman pled guilty to burglary and received a two year probated sentence with $100 costs. property from the Ray farm was found in his possession.
