Department of Public Safety officer Ben Burch confiscated a live marijuana plant from behind the driver seat of a vehicle driven by a Lamesa resident during a routine probe on US 87 South median. A 22 year old Lamesa man was charged with possession and released after posting a $2,500 bond.

The CVAE Parent-Student Banquet at the Women's Building honored 16 top students with awards for academics and service. Betty Blake earned an honor pin for a 94 average. Janie Sanchez received the most improved award. Lucy Cavazos won a sweetheart charm. Richard Zapata was cited for his help. Lucy Cavazos and Sylvia Garcia gave Jim Davee a dress jacket. Six citizenship pins were also awarded.
For the week of May 21 to 25 at the Lamesa school cafeteria, meals include ranchburgers with corn and salad on Monday, corndogs on Tuesday, green enchiladas on Wednesday, oven fried chicken on Thursday, and hamburgers on Friday. Dawson notes Super Dogs with pork and beans and cake milk for the week.
Bobby Hawkins and Mrs Ron Scott won first in a bridge tournament for ten week course graduates at Lamesa Country Club held last Thursday night. Other winners included Mrs Elmer Cope and Mrs James Brown in second, Mrs G C Clifft and Virginia Wilson in third, Mrs Kenneth Barron and Harold Hilley in fourth, Gary Laughlin and Mrs Will Morris in fifth. James Brown and Novelle Gresham tied for fifth. Second class for beginners and intermediate players will begin on Tuesday June 5 at the club. instructor is Art Roberts.
Higginbotham topped Sam Stevens 10-6 as Higginbotham’s Sam Stevens scored in every inning. David Witt earned the win in relief of Tim Jones. Wagon Wheel defeated Lamesa Federal 17-7 with two seven run innings, Sam Hansard securing the win. Lamesa Tractor and Motor beat Bob Brown 13-5, Alex Hernandez the winner.
New cheerleaders for the forthcoming school year were elected this week at Lamesa High School. Sherry Rebber was elected head cheerleader, with Gloria Artiaga Cathy Bizzell Sarah Branon Becky Hogg Teresa Owens and Cindy Bartlett named to the squad as alternates.
David Kirkland of Lamesa earned third place at the Lake Coleman fishing tournament held May 12 13. Sponsored by Midland's High Sky Bass Club the win earns him a spot in the Top Six Tournament at Lake Amistad June 2 3. The club meets monthly at 7 30 p.m. American Legion Hall Midland May 22 invites all anglers.
