Bicentennial kickoff lights up courthouse square and events

Special Events highlights Senior Citizens Week as Dawson County honors seniors with a Bicentennial themed afternoon at the Senior Citizen Center on North Lynn Avenue. Activities begin at 2 PM with awards by County Judge Leslie Pratt, greetings from agencies, and a colors presentation by Boy Scout Troop 708. Master of Ceremonies is Weldon Webb.

Top Students Named at Borden High School

Top students at Borden High School in Gail are Catherine Jackson valedictorian and Jim McLeroy salutatorian. Jackson has a 94.61 grade average and aims for Lubbock Christian College. McLeroy holds a 93.06 average and plans to attend Texas Tech University. Commencement exercises at the Borden County High School Auditorium are set for 8 pm Thursday May 22.

Lamesa Declared Bicentennial Community in Ceremony

Mayor Lloyd Cline received state and national Bicentennial certificates and a flag in a Friday morning ceremony. The event featured Lamesa and O'Donnell bands, a Webb Air Force Base Color Guard, and about 2,000 residents and students. Senator Kent Hance chaired remarks praising national heritage and unity amid a historic Dawson County backdrop.

Goss Community Press Rolls Off At South Plains Printing

The new Goss Community press at South Plains Printing in Lamesa began its first run just after midnight Friday. Under installer Jim Odom of Mobile, the 14,000 papers per hour unit produced 4,600 copies in a 17 minute stretch for Saturday editions to Lamesa and nearby towns.

Spencer Signs Cage Scholarship With Lubbock Christian College

Lamesa all state cager Eddie Lee Spencer signed a four year basketball scholarship with Lubbock Christian College. Coach Darrell Price praised Spencer's speed and leaping ability and said he will boost the press game next season. Spencer, 18, son of Mr and Mrs Lee Edward Spencer, was a two year letterman and all district selectee.
