The trial of Eugene Garcia for the June slaying of Linda Delgado starts with jury selection in 106th District Court on Monday. About 150 jurors are summoned. several excused by District Judge George Hansard as of noon Friday.
Elwood Hamilton a geologist by trade and meat cutter by training won an award of merit at a Scurry County art show for three welded iron sculptures. His pieces depict a scholar Abe Lincoln and a cowboy crafted from scrap iron and farm junkyard materials. He began sculpting during a layoff from building corrals and plans to continue creating Western themed works as time permits.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled in favor of Antonio Vela in an appealed revocation case while affirming probation revocation for Hilario Quintanilla. Both men pled guilty to arson on April 30, 1968, were sentenced to five years probated, and later found to have committed burglary and felony theft. Their probation terms were reduced to four years imprisonment after hearings on June 19, 1972.
The Lamesa Chamber of Commerce and local garden clubs urge residents to think red this spring. After daffodils and red tulips bloom, the Beautification Committee will plant red petunias on downtown islands to brighten the area all summer.
Shannon Koger, 12, daughter of Tom and Mrs. Koger, won the Dawson County Spelling Bee beating four contestants. Nathan Shofner placed as alternate after misspelling artificial, while Patti Beaty Gordon Davis Lisa Martin and Robin Kral earned notable finishes. The Kiwanis Club presented a championship plaque and pens, with Wayne Smith pronouncing. The winner advances to the regional bee in Lubbock.
Lamesa volunteers will canvas between 5 and 8 p.m. Monday for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Mrs. Vernon Flenniken chairs the drive with area leaders including Mrs. Orville Prather and Dr. Douglas B. Black. The effort aims to raise funds for MS research and aid for those aged 20 to 40 affected by the disease.
