The Dawson County bale count reaches 219,286 bales as the Texas Employment Commission completes its last cotton count for 1972. Gins Cotton Center and Ten Mile have closed, McBride Gin plans to close, with harvest concentrated in the south and west. Official totals exclude voided tags and out of county cotton and will be released in April or May.
Violent thunderstorms brought up to two inches of rain across Dawson County on Friday night into Saturday. Weather stations logged 1.4 inches at the ee station and 2.00 inches in multiple city and county gauges, delaying cotton crop windups and causing runoff in Lamesa while no damage was reported in the immediate county.
In Dawson County’s annual junior show, Kelli Youngblood won the Hereford Grand Champion and Randy Airhart took Reserve Grand Champion with repeat top finishes. The 35 steer entries included champions from Sands 4-H, Sands FFA, Lamesa 4-H, and O'Donnell 4-H. Lamb judging and barrow events followed, with trophies to be awarded Saturday and results to run in the next edition.
Oil and News reports Gulf Oil Corp plans a 7 350 foot drill site seven miles southeast of O Donnell in Dawson County. The site in Section 8 Block 1 T-6 N 1 lies 1980 feet south and 660 feet west of the section lines. Planned as add to Felken Spraberry production. Kewanee Oil Co completed an oil producer at No 3007 North Welch Unit three miles NW of Welch in Dawson County. Perforations from 4851 to 4907 feet produced 159 barrels of 344.4 gravity oil and 44 barrels of water in 24 hours. Zone stimulated with 1000 gallons acid and fractured with 6000 gallons gelled water and 6000 pounds sand located 2630 feet from north and east lines of Section 3 Block C-39 PSL survey.
Filing has closed for city council and school board posts in Lamesa with six candidates vying for three at large seats on the School Board. Incumbent Dr. David Smiley seeks a second term while George Norman and David Hughes opt not to run. Other nominees are Wendell Strahan Ed Fulbright Don Bethel Huey Harris and Gary Laughlin. In district court, prosecutors and defense argued four motions in the State versus Eugene Garcia case over Linda Delgado's death. Judge George Hansard presided in the 106th District Court as motions included change of venue and suppression of evidence requests.
The public is invited to the annual Dawson County Science Fair at the Middle School Gym from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. About 300 entries, over 100 more than last year, forced the venue move from Lamesa High School to the Middle School. Exhibitors must pick up projects after the fair closes.
The Dawson County 4 H Food Show is set for next Friday at 7 pm in Forrest Park Community Center. Eighty eight 4 H members will compete in four classes Main Dish Fruit and Vegetable Bread and Desert and Snacks and Beverages. Entrants must be enrolled 4 H members active in Foods and Nutrition programs. Five clubs with 27 leaders are organizing.
