James L. Clark a 19 year old Floresville serviceman stationed at Fort Carson Colorado died from injuries suffered in a crash on U S 87 three miles north of Lamesa. He died in Lubbock Methodist Hospital after ambulance transfer from Lamesa Medical Arts Hospital. He rear ended a Texas Electric Service Company truck driven by Willie Akin of Lamesa. Akin was uninjured. Cause undetermined as both cars were southbound with no skid marks.
The Texas Highway Commission awarded Stafford Construction Inc. a contract to rebuild 13.7 miles of U S 180 West from the Gaines County line to Jameson. Low bid 737 572 42 dollars. Work under District Engineer George C Wall Jr in Dawson County begins soon and will take about 200 working days. The road, damaged by last winter’s severe weather, will have reduced speed and load limits to protect the surface. HM Ables of Lamesa is the engineer in charge.
The Boys Club opens for boys eight to 18, hours 9 to 12 and 1 to 5, Monday through Friday. Art Karger runs it until June 18 when David Hogg becomes director. Summer recreation shifts to the Boys Club with tennis badminton volleyball basketball ping pong archery weight lifting shuffle board and table pool.
