In the premier district game at the Middle School gym the Golden Tornadoes host Snyder Tigers in a high stakes matchup likely to draw the biggest crowd yet. Snyder pursues its first district title in years while the home team seeks a comeback in front of a packed arena.
Gene Mays, a Shell Oil distributor serving nine counties including Lamesa, announced his candidacy for a place on the Lamesa Independent School District Board of Trustees in the April 1 election. A 1955 Texas Tech agriculture graduate, he has lived in the community nearly a decade with his wife and two children.
Deposits at Lamesa National and First National Banks reached 45,046,051.27 by Dec 31, 1971, down 2.6 million from 1970, due to late cotton harvest. Savings deposits at Lamesa Federal Savings and Loan rose to 23,008,068, boosting total area deposits to over 68 million.
A one day blood drive for Randy Burkett son of Mr and Mrs Gus Burkett of Midway will be held at Second Baptist Church Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Burkett burned in a Dec 31 farm accident and has had surgeries including removal of feet and one arm. He is at Parkland Hospital Dallas and has received about 40 pints of blood. The event is sponsored by the Brotherhood of the Midway Baptist Church and the Bloodmobile from Lubbock will handle it. The Texas Employment Commission records a final Dawson County cotton bale total of 119 741 for 1971 harvest. Six of 25 gins closed with more expected to shut this week as officials note the count will exceed census totals due to out of county bales and voided tags. Lamesa area harvest neared 95 percent, with 171 900 samples classed this season.
