Roy Davis, a towering figure in the West Texas cotton industry, died in Lubbock this week. His leadership and persuasive power were widely mourned as a significant blow to the sector nationwide. The obituary notes his enduring influence and the rarity of such figures in the field.
Two Lamesa residents returned from six weeks in Japan as Lions Club Exchange students. Linda Moody stayed in Kehnan City near Nagoya with the Nakamura family and described meals on the floor, rice paper windows, and strict shoe rules, while Bill Bristow stayed in Kamisawa with a traditional, religious family and noted the cautious, respectful culture and language gaps overcome with an interpreter. He expressed a desire to return to Japan.
The Lamesa Industrial Foundation named 11 appointees to form the Lamesa Community College Center Board. Members include Bob Crawley J D Williams Bob Brown Fred Weaver Rick Palmer Elwood Freeman Fred Vera Lee McCalister Mrs Inez McBrayer Willis Gresham and Stephen Henry. The foundation recently acquired a building on the Lubbock Highway to house the center which will be remodeled for classrooms and offices. Registration for fall courses was planned for Wednesday afternoon and evening with expectations of strong enrollment.
Lamesa School District enrollments topped 3087 on Wednesday with North Elementary 599 South Elementary 313 W Z Rogers 200 Central Elementary 235 Middle School 814 and High School 926. Over 200 late enrollees were added this year and about 2800 were in attendance last Friday.
Plains Fairways hosts a two day partnership golf tournament beginning Saturday with an $10 entry fee and 80 percent payouts in three places plus a putting and closest to the pin contest. Lamesa Country Club runs an 18 hole Saturday and Sunday 36 hole Monday Labor Day event with $30 entry and prizes of 150 100 and 50. a Vega Hatchback awaits a hole in one on hole four. Ladies doubles tennis begins Saturday at 8 am with sign up by Thursday 5 pm. luncheon and style show at 11:30 for members and spouses during the Labor Day event.
