The Country Editor notes a yearly Dawson County ritual as August rains favor cotton. Farmers, shopkeepers, and former experts debate yields, wagering on nationwide comparisons. Estimates range from 200,000 to 250,000 bales, with optimism that Dawson County will outpace some neighbors.
The Lamesa Campus of Howard College starts a new year long Licensed Vocational Nurse program under Richard Meador former surgery director at Kessler General Hospital Dallas. The class size hinges on Monday turnout with 18 of 33 applicants accepted and several alternates on standby. last year 15 were accepted and nine registered.
Seventeen autos were involved in mishaps across three days from Wednesday to Friday. The worst crash occurred at 1 46 p m Wednesday at North 2nd and Houston when a 1976 Chevy pickup driven east by Robert Earnest Foust of Ira failed to stop and hit a 1979 Ford pickup driven by Sylvia Robles of Welch. Robles was taken by private vehicle to Medical Arts Clinic.
The Lamesa Community Players led by president Dois Pace pursue a permanent home for productions and a distinctive logo. At a Thursday meeting at Lamesa National Bank the group discussed locating a practice and performance space, considering the old Tower theatre, but worried about renovation costs and time. The Tower's roof leaks and moisture damage were noted after a tour of the east square building. Help is also needed in securing support and space for the group.
Richard and Virginia Leonard celebrate a third Eagle Scout within their family as son Treavor earns the rank. Randy and Scott Leonard had Eagle awards in 1976, and James Logan joins them with son Mark earning Eagle this week. Troop 708 leaders praise the family tradition and the effort required to earn 21 merit badges over about four years.

The Texas legislature’s redistricting keeps Dawson County in Democrat Kent Hance’s 19th District, abandoning a split with the 17th District once represented by Charles Stenholm. The shift consolidates most of West Texas under the 19th, adding surrounding counties to district boundaries.
