Split forms rival Spanish American War Veterans group

A new body named the Spanish-American War Veterans splits from the existing group in Washington on November 24. It pledges inclusion for all who served in the Spanish-American or Philippine wars, with Admiral George Dewey named commander in chief and Miss Helen M. Gould as sponsor. The roster includes Theodore Roosevelt as senior vice commander in chief and Irving Hale as junior vice commander in chief.

Last of State Volunteers Musters Out After War

The First Tennessee regiment ceased to exist as 621 men and 44 officers received final pay. Of 1,360 at start, 195 remained in Manila with the Thirty-seventh infantry. 21 died, 3 were killed. Townspeople packed the camp as the unit left for home at 9. Townsend gave a 50,000 check for transportation, declined. A priest defended officers against charges, denying desecration by troops.

Ex-United States Officials Sentenced in Stamp Counterfeiting Case

Ellery P. Ingham ex United States district attorney and Harvey K. Newitt were sentenced by Judge McPherson to two years and six months in prison and a $1 fine plus costs for conspiracy involving bribery of a secret service operative tied to a large revenue stamp counterfeiting plot led by Lancaster cigarmakers William Jacobs and William J. Kendig. The judge stressed the offense warrants strong punishment though the maximum is five years.

Cotulla Devastated by Sudden Cloudburst Submerging Town

A Star dispatch reports Cotulla Texas sixty miles west of San Antonio was washed away by a cloudburst early today. Four inches of rain fell in thirty minutes drowning a merchant named Walker and his wife. Buildings were wrecked and livestock and ranch property sustained heavy damage.

In Paterson New Jersey on November 25 a grand funeral for the late Vice President Garret A Hobart drew President McKinley the Secretary of State John Hay Chief Justice Fuller former officials and lawmakers to the Church of the Redeemer. General Forester-Walker reports Lord Methuen’s forces pressed 500 Boers and multiple guns near Gras Pan ten miles north of Belmont. Busy Baltimore and Ohio lines show heavy railroad expansion

The Baltimore and Ohio lines west of the Ohio River are filled with bridges and construction crews. About 53 bridges bought last January are yet to be erected and 20,000 tons of 85 pound rails have largely been laid. Sidings with 100 car capacity are under construction, and vast grade reductions span from New ark to Chicago Junction with thousands employed. Between Chicago Junction and Chicago, nearly twenty sidings are planned to enable future double tracking. Most will be long enough for three 50 car trains.

The Pacific and Oriental mail train of the New York Central, leaving New York at 9 15, started with ten cars packed with bags and letters for Asiatic countries, Hawaii, Australia and the Philippine Islands. It will add cars at Buffalo, Chicago and Omaha, reaching San Francisco with thirteen or fourteen cars and the heaviest mail tonnage ever hauled by a locomotive. It is expected to set the fastest regular cross country time.
