Williams Threat From Havana On Trial Of Prisoners

A Havana dispatch describes Consul General Williams protesting Spain’s trial methods for the schooner Competitor prisoners. Williams argued for civil law, legal counsel, and witnesses, while Spain’s judge advocate general endorsed by Admiral Navarro ruled the protest groundless. The court martial sentenced all five to death, and Williams warned of further actions if executions proceeded. Madrid then ordered suspension and transfer of documents for higher review, delaying the fate of the prisoners.
