Private Thomas Smith of Company E South Dakota volunteers earned the Medal of Honor for single handedly fending off two Filipino attackers near Manila. After being wounded he killed one assailant and mortally wounded the other, then was carried three miles to safety and congratulated by General Otis. A gold watch was raised as a tribute by fellow soldiers. His parents live near Lake Preston, South Dakota.
