Laguna Woods Council extends Senior Mobility Taxi Voucher Program
The Laguna Woods City Council extends the Senior Mobility Taxi Voucher Program through June 2016 funded by the Orange County Transportation Authority. The program offers taxi bucks lowering 50 percent of trip costs via California Yellow Cab for residents 60 and older. Beginning June 30 non-emergency medical transport vouchers replace past City Hall trips and cover select destinations like the Long Beach VA hospital. Special Irvine Spectrum vouchers end, but taxi bucks remain valid for Spectrum at half price. City staff can still arrange trips, and residents may buy multiple vouchers directly from California Yellow Cab. Mayor Cynthia Conners calls the program a road safety benefit for all residents.

Electric cars offer clean power and charging quirks for seniors
Electric vehicles run on battery packs with seven hour 220 volt charging and about 80 miles per full charge. For a retiree like Galbraith, EVs suit short trips, though charging village car ports faces a 50 dollar daily fine. Community boards limit outlets, prompting home charging or public stations at Carl’s Jr and Irvine Spectrum. Hybrid and plug-in options provide varied ranges and costs, with Volt yielding about 3 cents per mile and up to ten thousand dollars in rebates available.
