Lifeguard Heritage Exhibit Highlights San Clemente System
Retired chiefs Bob Isenor and others, including Steve Long, co-curate a summer exhibit at San Clemente State Beach detailing the evolution of California state lifeguarding from early Long Beach beginnings in 1908 through the expansions at San Clemente, Doheny, and Huntington. The oral history covers campgrounds, Civilian Conservation Corps builds, and the Navy era equipment that shaped lifeguard culture.

Rescue boat era ends as new craft takes over coast duty
Lifeguard Garry Harvey operated a rescue boat from 1980 to 2008 off San Clemente Doheny and San Onofre, saving about 4000 swimmers and 800 vessels. The transition met resistance from the San Onofre Surf Club, which long controlled a private beach under Marines lease. Retired chief Mike Brousard praised the boat’s reach and safety, noting its value like a firetruck.
