The County Council of Defense seeks volunteers to meet the county quota for service. Officials urge available men to join and support local defense efforts in this mobilization drive.
The County Council of Defense mobilizes to enlist forty more men for either cavalry or the new North Wisconsin infantry. A Fourth of July drive culminates at Bruce and Ingram with regional meetings and an officer from the U.S. Army visiting Ladysmith. Camp Fire Girls under Mrs Alden J Laidlaw will raise 1000 dollars for troop funds, all spent on troop needs and government accountability. Island Lake July Fourth events at Johnson’s Grove include a basket picnic with races and a program featuring opening prayer, song, and speeches.
A rural census shows over four hundred farmers listing desired farm stock and produce to buy or sell and indicating help needs. Thirty seek harvest help while five want year around hands and six request help for six months. Three request kitchen help. Write to the agricultural agent or County Council for Defense with experience wages and details.
Money to loan. T. M. Thomas of Ladysmith. E. A. Page bought the old State bank building. Mr and Mrs Sylvester Wilson of Minneapolis visited here ten days and returned home Monday. Ralph Drum sold his drag bus iness and outfit to Fred Crandell who will continue the business and take possession Monday. Cavalry mobilization scheduled for July 5th is indefinitely postponed due to lack of uniforms and equipment. Mr and Mrs P. H. Griffin went to Milwaukee Monday night for the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association convention. Mrs Louis Lawrence entertained friends last Saturday in honor of her sister Mrs Arnold Cordes of New Ulm Minnesota. W. J. Campbell of Oshkosh, president of the Fountain Campbell Lumber Co., arrived here Wednesday with his wife and son and will stay through the week. Guy Hill of Stanley, whose wife has been visiting here at the Hill home for two weeks, visited Sunday. his wife will stay another week.
The American people answered once again with voluntary support on June 15 after the June 5 registration. Over 3,000,000 citizens bought Liberty Loan bonds, including many small earners, showing patriotic resolve and a broad financial backing for the war effort. The issuance ties the government and people, giving holders a citizen’s stake in the nation. Germany’s response is clear and unmasked by censorship.

The Ladysmith Gun Club hosts a benefit trap shoot on Sunday July 1 at 1 30 p m at the local fair grounds to aid the Red Cross Society. with 2500 targets donated and prizes from local merchants including five dollar casting red and silver spoons among others. Prizes go to top scorers with four high scores receiving first to fourth choices and no shooter winning more than one prize. Each run of twenty without a miss nets one dollar to the Red Cross. shooters may pay 2 cents for fewer than fifty targets. Shells sold on grounds and guns available free of charge.
H. H. Merrick president of the National Security League and National Credit Association, who spoke at Roosevelt, Joffre, and Viviani events in Chicago, has been secured by C. O Frisbie of the Cornell Wood Products Company to headline the July 4 monster celebration in Cornell.
Elizabeth A. Jordan aged 1 month and 10 days daughter of Mrs Wm Jordan died Wednesday morning from whooping cough. Funeral services were held at the home Thursday morning and burial took place that afternoon in Bruce cemetery beside her father who died about two months earlier.
Jones Chautauqua System will present a splendid program series in Ladysmith under the library board. The event runs from Saturday July 11 to Thursday July 12 with F E Munroe as local manager. Further details will appear next week.
County Superintendent O E Ric reminds clerks to mail census sheets between July 10 and 25 and to have annual reports in the superintendent's office by July 25. Balance on hand July 1, 1917 must match the prior year. The audit board must meet before the annual meeting to audit books, and voting requires holding a valid second term.
A letter from Marvin Noble serving aboard the U S S Topeka in Portsmouth N H praises Ladysmith readers and patriot efforts while noting a donation for another year. The issue also records two local weddings: Gertrude Anheier and Andrew T Coleman wed at St Marys Church with a large reception and plans to Milwaukee. Bert Lepley and Mary Hoff married at the bride s home with a quiet ceremony and plans to reside in a Brooklyn addition bungalow.
Recruiting week for the National Guard and Regular Army ends tomorrow night. On July 1 the draft machinery will start. Forty more men can enlist in Kroop K, First Wisconsin Cavalry. Those preferring infantry can enlist here in Ladysmith in the Fourth Wisconsin, the North Wisconsin regiment, be examined and sworn in locally.
R. J. Sands with his wife and daughter Bessie left Wednesday morning traveling by car to Knox North Dakota for a two week visit with Monroe Sands.
Lightning struck the residence of J. L. McComson early Monday morning. Electricity ran through a sewer ventilation pipe, flinging two boys from bed but causing no injuries. Minor damage included a torn roof section and paint splatter on walls.
Residents may join a St Marys church grounds picnic with games races and amusements. Evening events include a river log roll near the Gerard hotel and a horseback exhibition by Leroy Wallace of the cavalry troop. Fireworks and two dances at True s hall and Martins Third Platoon benefit the cavalry. Lyell s orchestra at True s hall and Howards at Martins.
Mrs. P J Anderson and her children depart tomorrow evening for Chicago. The note mentions Martin Cowin & Sons laying a 28 by 38 solid brick rear addition to Thompson Mercantile Co. and extending to the alley. Also described is a bicycle accident on Worden ay where James Hooker, 12, was struck by Carl Velkman in a Rambler, breaking his right leg between knee and ankle. Witnesses say Hooker rode on the wrong side and was wobbling as Velkman tried to avoid him.
Rain did not dampen enthusiasm as about one hundred farmers and families gathered at the fair grounds to hear lectures on the Holstein breed. Prof B Mac Dresden spoke on war emergency role for farmers. E J Delwiche urged winter grain feeding and rye for new breaking. Kraege of James Mfg Co. highlighted dairy records and urged pure bred calves for farm improvement.
Former Iowa residents in Rusk County held an informal meeting that became formal to form the Rusk County Iowa Society. L. C. Streater was chosen president with O. A. Sergent as secretary and treasurer. The group plans to enroll all former Iowa residents and asks them to register. Its aims are social and cooperative.
The State Council of Defense urges all able bodied men including farmers boys and ministers to work full time in productive jobs. It calls for registration with the Labor Agent of the County Council of Defense and to be ready to serve when needed. The message: every man on a job. Don’t be a slacker.
