Bay City celebrated the annual Rice Festival with a grand halftime display introducing 40 princesses and escorts as well as a festival queen and court. The event spilled into the Bay City La Marque football game, delaying the second period with a 40 minute halftime.
Religious instruction for Galveston public school special education students is offered Saturdays 9:30 to 11:20 a.m. at Sacred Heart School starting October 2, with registration on that day. A group of six teenage boys robbed William Doberspike, driver for Schott's Sunbeam Bakery of Houston, at the La Mar que shop on Albert Street. They tied him, took nearly $700 in cash and checks from the safe, and fled wearing improvised masks. Police, led by Officer Fogarty, reported ongoing thefts across the La Marque area including saddles, a residence burglary, and a Boys Club break in.

Stanton C. Calvert has joined College of the Mainland as Dean of Student Personnel Services, taking over the post from Dr Jack Elsom who left to become president of Ranger College. Calvert, a Dimmitt native, earned PhD work in community college administration at the University of Texas in Austin and previously served as administrative intern at the Mainland in 1970.
