The Girl Scouts of America celebrate their 59th birthday with a national birthday week March 7 through March 13. Founded by Juliette Low in Savannah in 1912 the organization highlights both traditional and modern Scouting for 500 girls across Brownies Juniors and other levels.
The La Marque Times relays a humorous reflection on receiving a rare U S Treasury check and taxes as a rental for living in the United States. It then outlines La Marque Girl Scout Cadette and Senior activities for a week, including church services, troop meetings, badge work, a Mother-Daughter banquet, and a SeaArama outing planned for Saturday Out-of-Doors Day.
Dr Weldon G. Kolb of La Marque was named to a one year term on the State Chapter Editors' Committee of the American Academy of General Practice. The 932000 member group, based in Kansas City, requires ongoing education with 150 hours every three years. The committee reviews chapter publications.
Walter and Helen Hall of League City Texas are feted for forty years in banking with an open house March 10 at League City State Bank lobby from 3 to 7 p.m. Walter began as a bank cashier in 1931 and rose to preside over five banks with combined assets over 95 million dollars. Helen serves as director at Citizens State Bank and volunteers with Red Cross and community fund groups. Walter, Rice University graduate and civic activist, is known for open political involvement and a wide range of business and community activities.
The La Marque School Board accepted a petition from citizens to annex an area west of the Gulf Freeway into the district but took no action. About 40 children would be affected, and the area lies from the Freeway to FM 519 between Duroux and Westward. The petition, signed by roughly 80 percent of qualified voters, urged annexation in the interest of education and expanded curriculum.
Four additional candidates file for April 3 elections in La Marque with new bids for City Council posts and College of the Mainland trustees. Harold K. Choate and Dennis Payne join the field against incumbents, while one candidate switches in the La Marque School Board race. Mayor’s post remains unopposed.
The Mainland Association of Life Underwriters will donate a set of Life Insurance books to county, high school, and College of the Mainland libraries in Galveston County. Titles include Dictionary of Insurance, The Great Provider, Estate Planning for the Young Professional Man, Getting the Most for Your Family's Life Insurance Dollar, and guides on health and life insurance. A luncheon on March 11 at Mac's Restaurant in Texas City will feature Judge Ned Price as speaker. books will be presented.
The National Junior Honor Society E. H. Black chapter at La Marque Junior High School initiated 25 students on Tuesday night February 23 in the school auditorium. Deborah Norman and Sally Harrell spoke, Mrs Mildred Bauman was guest, and Dr Eugene Tenney awarded pins and cards to the new members.
The Blue Angels perform a back to back formation with two solo pilots inverted and beneath the other jet. Lieutenant Skip Umstead executes a 550 mph inverted half roll across the display. The Blue Angels promote naval aviation and train as top officers for two to three year tours and public demonstrations.
