The 200 mile Old Spanish Trail from Logansport Louisiana carried 300 riders to Houston for a downtown parade prep. Ernest Black led the Salt Grass Trail Boss group for the fourth year as they traversed highways recalling the historic route. Memorial Park awaited them after the long ride.
A humorous column lists local women who contributed dishes for a gathering, complimenting many desserts and savory treats. It describes fried chicken, cherry cobbler, red beans and sausage, potato salad, angel food cake, blackberry cobbler, bean salad, wild rice, and a chocolate cake inscribed with Frank Tucker’s name. Union Local 1521 demands across the board pay hike and improved benefits as 175 hospital staff face wage scales. Winnie Duggan, longtime La Marque resident and former La Marque Garden Club president, is named Woman of the Year by the Jaycee-Ettes of La Marque. A reception will be held February 21 at 1328 Rhodora, 2 to 4 p.m., inviting friends to celebrate her Christian spirit and community work with Inter-City School and other projects. Her family includes son Hugh and daughter Pat, with residences in La Marque and Pascagoula Mississippi.
Janice Johnson of the Dallas NAACP youth division with Mainland NAACP branch and Youth Council will review expulsions of Black students in Texas City La Marque and Dickinson. They will meet officials to propose recruiting Black teachers and counselors and discuss inclusive multi racial texts and alternative club selection measures. Local participants include Jessie Collins Norris Preston and Mrs E M Lyles.
A 10 mile section of Highway 45 in Freestone County near Dew was opened ahead of schedule on Friday February 12. The new stretch runs from Buffalo north to the SH 179 exit near Dew, after which traffic will be routed onto US 75.
