LM Postmaster Named BPW Woman of the Year
Pauline Bogatto postmaster of La Marque since 1937 is named Woman of the Year by the American Business Women's Association Hub of the Mainland chapter. The Moody Foundation of Galveston approved 23 grants totaling almost 1 million dollars at its third 1971 meeting. In all, 56 grants worth nearly 3 million were awarded this year to educational and medical innovation pollution research and the performing arts. New educational awards include Galveston Early Childhood Learning Center 241000 Corpus Christi Early Childhood Development Program 40000 and IMAGE 60000 to expand Yearn to Learn centers along the Rio Grande. College level grants go to Texas Association of Developing Colleges 35000 and University of Dallas 78000 to support new instructional concepts and expanded facilities.

Opium Sell Arrests Reported in La Marque
Police report a La Marque case where Herman Davis 2520 Jackson sold opium to a state narcotics agent. Davis is jailed after a grand jury capias with $15,000 bond. Two La Marque residents were later nabbed on narcotics charges after a tip led officers to Texas Super Market where barbiturate capsules marijuana cigars and paraphernalia were found. Bond $2,500 each.

La Marque Youth Win State Law Enforcement Award
The La Marque Youth Conference was singled out for the best law enforcement related project and a La Marque girl was elected state office at the ninth annual Texas Youth Conference in Seguin. Delegates included Barbara Ottwork, Debbie Buchhorn, Pam Sutton, Pat Donoho, and Effie Donoho. Galveston Youth Conference won seven of eight awards. Armin Cantini received a plaque as outstanding youth conference president. The March of Dimes Walkathon swept three honors. State TY C President Rickey Alexander addressed the assembly. Bernard McSuttler gave the Friday keynote.

County Memorial Reaccredited for Two More Years
County Memorial Hospital in Galveston County has been reaccredited for two more years by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals after a June survey by a physician and administrator.
