During the first week of school nine more pupils enter the crowded Central School. Overfilled quarters force teachers to borrow chairs from other grades and high school students sit in the assembly room. The eighth grade is barred from their own rooms to preserve order as new arrivals strain existing space.
Under the auspices of the New York Athletic Club the national senior and junior championships of the Amateur Athletic Union opened at Travers Island. Many athletes of world wide repute are entered for the track and field events. The finale is scheduled for tomorrow.
Cincinnati, Sept 18. Senator Foraker released a statement disputing Hearst's reading of letters from John Archbold of Standard Oil. He says the letters may be correct but he cannot be sure and notes his Standard Oil engagement ended before the Senate terms. He denies any link to pending legislation and explains no impropriety.

Los Angeles reports that Judge Chur. G. Van Fleet, a Colorado superior court judge and congressional candidate, died after receiving a distress note from his wife about hunger and shoes. Authorities link Van Fleet to funds for Nevada mining ventures as the presumed cause of his downfall. Baseball scores listed: Oakland 2 Los Angeles 9 Portland 5 San Francisco 4.
Sanford of Hilgard confesses the bottle central to Holverson’s second arrest was not Holverson’s property.
