Ponteroy Oct 20 After six hours the jury found Fitzmaurice not guilty in the Missouri libel case against the Columbia County Standard. The editor of the Standard, Warrant Was, was acquitted. Prosecution, A. A. Kirby, says perjury charges will proceed. Fitzmaurice was re-arrested. Kirby alleges Fitzmaurice threatened to publish the incriminating article. The editor denies the sworn statement. A. W. Di Maya, convicted of related libel writing, faces penalties. Fitzmaurice remains in county jail awaiting a second trial likely within days.
In Walla Walla on October 25 26 a car checker named Williams confronted a highwayman in a Paseo yard and after ordering him to raise his hands Williams drew back to strike. The bandit fired hitting Williams in the lung and fatally wounding him, with word reaching the city this morning.
