Engineer James Gavin Seriously Injured In Yard Collision

James Gavin, a young engineer, was badly hurt Saturday night when a stock car struck his engine in the yards. A splinter pierced his abdomen and leg, with infection threatening his recovery. he remained alive but gravely wounded in the hospital, with death possible due to infection rather than the injuries. The crash occurred as Gavin stood at the lubricator and the cowcatcher struck the second engine, tipping cars and jolting the cab. The incident was followed by continued reporting on page 34.
