Columbia Oct 26 The South Carolina state fair opened this morning for its annual exhibition running through Friday night. The event showcases every variety of art and industry in the state and features a fine program of racing football and other sports.
James Gavin, a young engineer, was badly hurt Saturday night when a stock car struck his engine in the yards. A splinter pierced his abdomen and leg, with infection threatening his recovery. he remained alive but gravely wounded in the hospital, with death possible due to infection rather than the injuries. The crash occurred as Gavin stood at the lubricator and the cowcatcher struck the second engine, tipping cars and jolting the cab. The incident was followed by continued reporting on page 34.
