In Auburn California on November 22 Alma Bell testified in her defense that she killed her lover Joe Ames after he promised to marry her and then refused. She recounted their exchanges and the belief marriage would fix their troubled relationship.
A hearing on the water suit involving rights along the Caldwell Ditch was held today. Attorneys argued about access, allocation, and responsibilities in the shared irrigation system.
Miss Allen a noted elocutionist will present a reading Friday evening at the Central Church under the Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church. A pleasing program will follow and tickets cost 25 cents for adults and 20 cents for children.
David Hawes aged 80 and longtime Hilgard resident died after a long illness at Grande Ronde Hospital. He has two sons and three daughters surviving, with services planned at the Christian church tomorrow at 2 PM. He had been living with his daughter in La Grande in recent years.
Theodore Rizzo was executed by electric chair at 6:15 AM for a brutal kidnapping and murder that targeted two Utica men. Victims Fannie Infusine and Freddie Infusine were seized on September 13. Teresa Pereoul’s body was later found in a culvert. Freddie died soon after. Fannie survived with a bullet wound. Rizzo confessed after arrest.
In St Petersburg on November 22 authorities detained several individuals including three wealthy suspects linked to the Great Northern Glass Company. German nationals are among those detained in the government swindle probe.
On November 22 the Hifaved steamer St Croix caught fire off Los Angeles as it reached Malibu Bay. One hundred fourteen passengers and crew survived by using dune shores overnight with Captain Warner guiding the evacuation. Stewardess Mrs Haven stood by to aid refugees and feed children during the perilous ordeal.

La Grande moves to secure a chautauqua for late summer with praise for Riverside Park and central Valley location. Community leaders from the Commercial Club and Park Association back the plan while Ashland's assembly serves as a model. Pendleton and Baker towns expected to join.
