The June ballot in Oregon includes twenty candidates six measures plus four legislative referenda and twelve initiative items. Voters face a complex task with liquor questions and many levies at stake requiring careful study before casting ballots. A sample ballot will appear in The Observer soon.
Allegheny National Bank in Pittsburg closes its doors and enters receivership as court orders National Bank Examiner Robert Lyons to take charge. A local investigation and financier concerns had shown the troubled bank nearly hopelessly involved after cashier William Montgomery’s speculations.
Washington delegates to the Denver convention will be chosen by the state convention in Spokane. Indications point to Bryn receiving unanimous endorsement and the delegation being instructed for him.
San Francisco May 1 the Ruef Parkside realty bribery case began with the assistant district attorney making the opening plea for the people against the ex-boss.
Henry Rudolph Amann a 43 year old Chicago man driven by money troubles murdered his 12 year old son Walter and stabbed himself. After attempting to abandon the boy near Lake Forest and Fort Sheridan they discussed dying together signing an agreement to die. Amann survived briefly but is in Fort Sheridan hospital and may not live.
Union County moves to suppress the saloon with a series of meetings starting tomorrow evening at the skating rink in La Grande. Preaching Elder J D Gillan Rev W Seemann Hon Geo Stoddard and Hon F Bramwell will discuss Why the Saloon Is a Menace as part of a county wide drive to spread the dry county gospel. Free admission invites all to join the campaign in city and county venues.
La Porte Indiana May 18 In her alleged campaign of murder Mrs Belle Gunness is said to have run a profitable business netting about 65900. A tabulation lists sums from husbands and suitors with real estate as the likely destination.
Portland dispatch lists Judge Coke's itinerary through Oregon with stops at Ontario Yale Haines Baker City Union Hermiston Condon Arlington Pendleton Weston and Ta Grande. Governor Chamberlain starts Willamette valley tour tonight in Medford and plans other valley stops.
President Van urged the National Manufacturers' Congress to enter politics to oppose labor candidates claiming the labor vote is overrated and will not exceed 500000 votes, with no one backing it strong.
Former Senator George Turner opened the Democratic state convention in Spokane and is expected to be named permanent chairman. He spoke against the recent local option adopted by the Republican convention. W. W. Dunphy of Walla Walla is likely to be chosen national committeeman. Names for delegates and electors from several districts are listed, including Bald win, Helfer, Ham ilton, Kernan, and McDonald.
Rioting by strike sympathizers flared in Cleveland Ohio as a street car dispute escalates. A conductor was assaulted while waking a switch and another mob destroyed his car after stones were hurled. Police dispersed the mob to end the clash.
Philadelphia May 18. A society new meet attracts horse owners from many cities. The Penn ylvania State Breeders' and Racine weoelation opens tomorrow and runs on Thursday and Saturday with rules of the event to follow.
The National Steeplechase and Hun allegation will govern the affair and promise to be one of the most successful of its kind ever held in America.
William Jennings Bryan has accepted an invitation to deliver his lecture on The Prince of Peace before the Methodist quadrennial conference tomorrow evening in Baltimore.
French senators and deputies hurry back to Paris after an Easter vacation they voted to end on April 11. Parliament will be formally reconvened tomorrow with several important measures to be brought to the attention of both houses.
Stanley Ketchel is matched to meet Billy Papke in Milwaukee on June 4 in a 10 round bout. Both fighters must weigh under 164 pounds at 3 o clock.
Cleveland May 19 Mayor Tom L. Johnson declares Cleveland will not be governed by mob rule amid a street railway strike. He says he will intervene only when disorder ends and factions conduct themselves lawfully, and he plans talks with D W Mahon of the Carmen's union to seek a settlement. The street railroad lines run normally today with no disorder reported. The state board of arbitration moves to adjust the dispute.
Governor Sparks shows marked improvement after severe illness. He left the hospital this morning and plans to travel, with supporters noting his condition as improving and stable.
The ALECO fleet led by the Connecticut with Sperry's pennant leaves San Francisco bound for Puget Sound May Eight after a Northwest tour. Ships split to Port Angeles Bremerton Port Townsend and Bollingham Bay with Seattle rendezvous May 23 and Tacoma by May 27. Some vessels continue to San Francisco then Hong Kong and Australia. Maine and Albina omit northward.
Montgomery reports indicate Truman Bryan will win Alabama delegates and electors with little opposition. Delegates and alternates to the national convention and other state officers including two supreme court justices and the railroad commissioner were chosen in the day's primaries.
Democratic primary elections will be held tomorrow across Florida including Jacksonville where delegates to the Denver convention will be chosen. Candidates for president United States senator and Congress will be nominated along with state and county offices. The Florida delegation to Denver is reported to be solid for Bryan.
Anton Vey of Echo purchased 40 dozen acres at $1.25 per acre in a door sale at the land office. The transaction shows the rancher expanding holdings near Echo.
Purse money amounting to 2400 is offered for the opening race of the Western Canada Turf association circuit at Cranbrook British Columbia on May 18. The Calgary meeting is scheduled for next week as part of the same circuit.
Four La Grande high school track team members will be chosen to attend the Corvallis interscholastic meet. The selection is to be decided by popular vote among all members of the squad.
