The transfer prompts resentment among sailors and officers, with speculation that Dayton delayed sailing to showcase leadership. The scene shifts to California as a separate court matter unfolds in San Francisco.
Steamships pishing and temoval threaten to leave the Pacific void of American merchant marine as reports from San Francisco on May 16 describe a looming disruption in maritime service and national trade.
A Seattle report notes the Oriental Occi dent Steamship company may go out of business in 20 days and hints the Pacific Malt Steamship company will discontinue soon, risking removal of the U S flag from Pacific merchant marine. The Great Northern Railroad offers 5000 dollars for Wells Fargo express robbers caught after last week’s train theft near Seattle.
Rioting reported in Panku China with significant property damage and many killed and wounded. In Toklo elections the government won by a substantial parliamentary majority.
Automobile owners from Walla Walla Baker City Pendleton and possibly Portland bring fast cars for demonstration runs at the fair grounds next Saturday afternoon. A mile course is expected to be completed in about one minute with curved track handling by various makes. The Auto committee seeks a special round trip train for spectators fare 25 cents, grounds admission free, and a morning auto parade before the races.
Dr. Evans, key witness in Thaw trials, testifies in habeas corpus hearing at Poughkeepsie that he believes Harry K. Thaw is sane based on his Matteawan observations. Thaw may take the stand today as his lawyers prepare the defense.
In Quaker City Philadelphia on May 16 the grand encampment and grand lodge of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of Pennsylvania begin their meeting with the Rebekah degree ceremony. Attendance is expected to be the largest ever, city hall to be lit in honor, and the keys to the city to be presented to grand lodge officials. Receptions, excursions, dances, and drills by military branches will follow through much of next week.
A broad street car strike in Cleveland began this morning with most municipal street cars grounded but minimal violence. Police reported a mob attack on the chief of police and over 1900 workers out, while management predicted service to resume within 10 hours and no militia was needed.
In Elgin on May 16 a large crowd braved sleet and rain to watch sixty splendid horses in the stock show parade. Judging started at 11:86 before weather delayed events, with winners to be announced later and market day sales conducted after the parade.
La Grande's Young places second in hurdles and third in pole vault as Baker City hosts the eastern Oregon track and field meet. In the 100 yard dash Gordon of Pendleton wins, Bear of Baker City second, Walters of Island City third. Jay Pendleton takes first in the 220 yard event with Young La Grande second and A Means Pendleton third.
A Portland paper notes railroad officials refused to grant passes at the Terville convention, forcing attendees to pay their own fares under a new law. Early in the state convention a motion proposed appointing a three member committee by the chair.
La Porte Indiana May 16 Seven thousand dollars was set aside as a reward for the arrest of Mrs Gunness if she is still alive The county commissioners made the move this morning Five thousand dollars was placed to cover coroner expenses and two thousand for the spirit for the investigation It is believed there are few if any more bodies on the farm
Alvin Heyton, 14, confessed to killing Mary Stevens, purported sweetheart, last April after meeting her at 5. He said he shot her four times and hid the body in rocks at Garden Hollow to prevent marriage. He claimed he returned home to establish an alibi, doing chores and acting normal to prove he was there.
More than 1000 Methodist Episcopal delegates were hosted at American University in Washington. President Roosevelt Vice President Fairbanks and Senator DolIVER were received, with Bishop Cranston presiding at the event.
Unofficial reports say President Roosevelt warned Japan to regulate arrivals or face an exclusion policy. Talks follow a passport agreement, with U S pressure to halt influx while Japan resists exclusion plans.
